Contrast Studies

Occasionally a simple radiograph (x-ray) does not show a veterinarian what needs to be seen.  At Cooley Animal Clinic, there are a few types of contrast studies that can be performed.  The most common is the barium series.  Barium is swallowed by the patient and when the x-ray is taken, the barium will appear to "light up" on the film.  Many radiographs will be taken to follow the progress of the barium moving through the digestive system.  Contrast is also sometimes used to get a better look in the bladder.

Please call if you have any questions regarding contrast studies!
